What is Plaque? Princeton, NJ
mouth with clean gums

Plaque is the buildup of a thick, sticky substance that develops throughout the body. Plaque can lead to serious damage wherever it occurs, and it is considered to be the most damaging substance inside the mouth. Your mouth is the host to millions of bacteria on a daily basis that feast off of the foods and beverages that you eat each day. Every meal, snack, soft drink, cup of coffee, glass of wine, or piece of candy leaves tiny particles behind, and the bacteria inside the mouth react. Due to the fact that bacteria are present inside the mouth all of the time, they are constantly assaulting your teeth through the damaging effects of plaque buildup.

Plaque is created by a chemical reaction that occurs inside the mouth when bacteria and sugars meet. All foods and beverages other than water contain sugar – whether it’s natural sugar or artificial sugar (bacteria cannot tell the difference) – and they congregate in large quantities around the sugar particles. As the bacteria attack these sugar particles, they begin to create acids to help break the particles down. Acids in any form are damaging because they will eat their way through whatever is in their path. Inside your mouth, acids will eat through your teeth and create cavities, and they will eat through your gum tissues, causing gum disease.

If you have ever run your tongue over your teeth late in the day and felt a fuzzy film on the teeth, then you are aware of how much plaque can develop in a single day. As plaque builds up on the teeth throughout each day, the teeth are exposed to a great amount of acid-laden plaque. Removing plaque from the teeth on a daily basis is your greatest weapon against the damage that plaque can do.

The daily removal of plaque is truly not hard to do, yet it is one of the most overlooked aspects of a daily oral hygiene routine: flossing. Dental floss is the only tool designed to remove plaque from the teeth. While a toothbrush can clean the rough surfaces of the teeth, freshen the breath, and help loosen plaque from the smooth surfaces – it was not designed to actually remove plaque from the gum line or from between the teeth. Dental floss is able to slide underneath plaque buildup and scrape it away. It is essential that flossing is done on a daily basis because if it is allowed to linger, it will harden into a calcified deposit known as tartar. Tartar is a yellowish to brownish deposit that can only be removed at the dentist’s office with special scraping tools.

Prime Dental Care wants to encourage you to make flossing a daily habit. We are here to encourage you to floss daily and make your oral health a priority.

My husband has been going to Dr Ma and this practice for many years and swears by them so I thought I would try it out. Very pleasant and professional with a great location and good availability, they respond to queries in a timely way and provide reminders for appointments via text which is great since some practices appear to be in the dark ages on some of the practical stuff. Everyone seems to try to ensure you have a pleasant visit (in spite of being to the dentist!) so kudos to the whole operation. Also, a lot of care has been taken to go above and beyond the requirements of hygiene during this pandemic including state-of-the-art air filtration systems.
