Smoking: Detrimental To Your Oral Health Princeton, NJ

Smoking and chewing tobacco have been around for centuries, and it is a habit that a large fraction of the U.S. population still picks up each year. Despite the known effects that tobacco usage has on a person’s health, millions of Americans light up each year. Countless medical studies have proven that tobacco is a direct cause of devastating conditions and diseases, yet one specific area is often overlooked that is specifically affected by smoking: the mouth.

Your mouth is home to one of your most personal features, known as your smile. People often judge others based on the appearance and condition of their smiles. Smoking is well known for causing foul breath and discolored teeth – neither of which make a good first impression. Those who are seeking a new job, hoping to land a promotion, or hoping to snag a great date are often at a great disadvantage if they smoke and/or use other types of tobacco. However, there are much more serious consequences for smokers aside from the appearance of their smiles.

Two of the most detrimental effects of continued smoking and tobacco use are periodontal disease and oral cancer. Periodontal disease is the lesser known, yet it almost always develops first and its effects are irreversible. Periodontal disease is the severe infection of the gum tissues that surround and support the teeth. Tobacco irritates the gums and leaves them incredibly vulnerable to infection and disease. The most important thing to realize about periodontal disease is that it is irreversible. Once the damage is done, it cannot be undone. Treating periodontal disease requires extensive and expensive treatment, and it typically cannot save the teeth.

Oral cancer is a more well-known side effect of smoking and tobacco use because it has “cancer” in its name. however, oral cancer should never be thought of as just an oral health concern. Cancer cells do not isolate themselves to one part of the body – they easily travel through the blood stream and lymph nodes, carrying this devastating disease to other major organs and compromising a person’s life.

At Prime Dental Care, our dental practice is committed to providing outstanding oral health care to all our patients. If you are a smoker or tobacco user, please contact us. We want to help you quit once and for all, and help you overcome the damage that tobacco has caused on your oral health.

My husband has been going to Dr Ma and this practice for many years and swears by them so I thought I would try it out. Very pleasant and professional with a great location and good availability, they respond to queries in a timely way and provide reminders for appointments via text which is great since some practices appear to be in the dark ages on some of the practical stuff. Everyone seems to try to ensure you have a pleasant visit (in spite of being to the dentist!) so kudos to the whole operation. Also, a lot of care has been taken to go above and beyond the requirements of hygiene during this pandemic including state-of-the-art air filtration systems.

Starting from reception to the assistant to the doctors they are so amazing. I have major dental anxiety and they were above and beyond sweet and nice to me. I have come back after a root canal and I can go for a run I feel that good and comfortable with them. They rock! They are awesome- I highly recommend this place
