How To Handle a Dental Emergency Princeton, NJ
Dr. Joyce Guojun Ma, DDS, PhD in her lab

Emergencies are stressful, often painful, and scary – no matter what your age is. Dental emergencies are no different, and knowing how to handle them before they occur is often the best way to successfully ensure that you take the best steps for restoring the health of your mouth.

The most important thing to understand is what constitutes as a dental emergency. A dental emergency involves any of the following:

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A damaged dental bridge or crown
  • A knocked out tooth
  • A lost filling
  • An infection or abscess in the mouth
  • An injured jaw
  • Dental bleeding
  • Extreme tooth sensitivity
  • Swelling in the mouth
  • Tooth pain

While a knocked out tooth is the most obvious dental emergency, the others listed above are also considered emergencies. In fact, it is the other emergencies that often get dental patients into the most trouble simply because they are not always viewed as emergency situations. Any type of injury or infection to a single tooth can wreak havoc inside the entire mouth. Ignoring a sore tooth, tooth sensitivity, or any type of damage to dental work is a very unwise decision. While these emergencies may be less urgent, they still need to be evaluated and addressed by your dentist within just a few days in order to prevent drastic and expensive dental work.

If a knocked out tooth has occurred, seeking immediate attention from your dentist is imperative. Any time a tooth has been knocked out of its socket, or even knocked loose within its socket, there will be severance from its blood supply. Without a constant blood supply, the tooth will die. Taking these four steps will give you the best chance of saving a knocked out tooth:

  • Find the tooth.
  • Try to gently place the tooth back into its socket.
  • If unsuccessful at replacing the tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva
  • Get to your dentist right away.

My husband has been going to Dr Ma and this practice for many years and swears by them so I thought I would try it out. Very pleasant and professional with a great location and good availability, they respond to queries in a timely way and provide reminders for appointments via text which is great since some practices appear to be in the dark ages on some of the practical stuff. Everyone seems to try to ensure you have a pleasant visit (in spite of being to the dentist!) so kudos to the whole operation. Also, a lot of care has been taken to go above and beyond the requirements of hygiene during this pandemic including state-of-the-art air filtration systems.

Starting from reception to the assistant to the doctors they are so amazing. I have major dental anxiety and they were above and beyond sweet and nice to me. I have come back after a root canal and I can go for a run I feel that good and comfortable with them. They rock! They are awesome- I highly recommend this place
