5 Dental Care Tips for Seniors in Princeton, NJ Princeton, NJ

The older you get in the harder it can be to take care of your teeth. Here are some things that you can do to help you stay on top of your oral care:

Brush lightly with a soft-bristled toothbrush
Gum loss is common with age and can result in sensitivity. To prevent gum loss from getting worse than it has to be, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently to avoid damaging the gum tissue.

Use a water flosser
Seniors who suffer from arthritis usually have a hard time maneuvering flossing string around their teeth. Using a water flosser is a much simpler and more effective way of cleaning debris from between your teeth. Rather than using string, a water flosser has a handheld nozzle that shoots a burst of high pressurized water to flush away leftover food particles and plaque.

Don’t sleep with prosthetics in your mouth
If you wear a partial or denture, you should remove it before you go to sleep. Your gum tissue needs time to vent and breath; prolonged use of prosthetics can cause severe gum swelling and irritation.

Treat dry mouth
Dry mouth is also common with age, and especially if you take a number of medications. Dry mouth can lead to cavities and painful mouth ulcers. There are several products available over the counter and our Princeton dentist can let you know which ones help best with your dry mouth symptoms.

Visit a Princeton, NJ dentist regularly
Getting older means being more at risk of developing certain dental conditions. This is something that our Princeton dentist can help you combat by seeing you regularly for cleanings and check-ups.

If it’s been a while since you’ve visited the dentist, then give us a call today to get your smile back on track.

I came in for my first appointment with severe pain in my wisdom tooth and they were very helpful from the start. I don’t have insurance, but they have an in-house plan that’s very affordable and can save over $1000 a year and I’m definitely signing up for it. The hygienist was super kind and informative and the dentist was the same. I got here 30 mins early and they started me as soon as I finished my paperwork anyway. Thanks to everyone here for a great experience.
